Unit 3 Reflection: Technologies & Education

In last unit, we discussed about technologies and education topic. We had to search some articles from different websites, such as DVC database, Twitter and Google. I found that teachers and students to use technology in education are becoming increasingly important. Some of teachers began using online teaching and students used IPad or computer in class. I also found that online assignment is becoming gradually common type to finish homework. Thus, I decided to explore this question: do online assignments benefit for students and teachers? The reason I chose this question is online assignment also connect with my learning life. When I studied in college, some of courses are using internet to submit homework assignments. This is my first time using technology to finish homework assignment. Before I studied in college, all of homework assignments are writing on paper. Therefore, after using technology to finish assignment in some courses, I want to know online assignment what benefits for students and teachers used in education.

The core words of my question are “benefits for online assignment”. It was easier to search relevant articles from different searching websites. When I selected articles, I would look for that the article addressed arguments about online assignments benefit for students and teachers, or provided specific personal example to support it. Maybe some articles only described benefits for students or teachers, it also related to my question. Finally, I chose seven articles relevant my question, I deeply known how technologies impacted students and teachers. For teachers, it decreased time to collect exercises, don’t have to carry stacks of homework paper, and as soon as possible to give back feedback. For students, they can finish assignment anywhere and anytime, increase student motivation to finish assignments and instantly gain feedback and solution for each assignment.

In conclusion, searching relevant articles to narrow question, and then through key words to choose articles to support the question.

Unit 2 Reflection: How To Read Arguments

In this unit, I learned how to look for article arguments. The second book we read is here comes everybody. It is written by Clay Shirky. This book is talking about social media. We read this book to learn how to find out the author’s arguments in each chapter. First, we have to find out overall argument in the chapter. It could be a set of ideas. According to individual sections in each chapter, we can summarize this section and find argument. For example, the chapter 1 title is “It takes a village to find a phone”. The story is about one person lost a phone and through social media how to retrieves the phone with groups helping. Following section title, such as “New Leverage for Old Behavior”, we can guess some ideas the author will talk in this section. “New leverage” could mean social media, and “old behavior” means traditional communication type. Therefore, I think this section will talk about how social media connect with traditional communication or compare with it. After read whole chapter, we can find out arguments what the chapter discussion about. The overall argument of chapter 1 is the social media how to change social structure and affect more people. The author uses the story about retrieving the lost phone to support his idea. It is very detailed explaining his argument and introduce social media has powerful ability to affect social.

Another important article is also talking about social media. However, these two authors present different arguments about social media and social change. We can find out all of arguments and compare it to improve our reading skill. The second article’s title is “Small Change”, and author is Malcolm Gladwell. He declared one important argument is that social media is weak-ties to connect each other. Each user may never know their friends who they are in real life. The relationship of them only was exchange for information in social media. Here is a set of each author’s ideas from their article.

Apart from these two authors’ arguments, we had to look for two articles about social media in DVC database. It could let us search other author’s arguments to compare. Then, we need to search five more articles to support Shirky or Gladwell’s argument. Through specific example from searching article can support and clarify author’s arguments. Here is some my searching articles links from Google.

Overall, we need to find out arguments and supporting example why author state these views. And also we have to find some articles which have the same main arguments and specific events to connect the arguments.

Unit 1 Reflection: The Practice of Close Reading

Throughout unit one, my closing reading has improved a lot in this process.

First part of process, I learned how to observation a story or an article. I tried to find out main ideas, important information, specific words or any thing what I interested or confuse in text. Then, I wrote some annotation near what I marked in text. Annotation could explain what I thought and record critical thinking. Following picture was my first article in this class. I just tried to find out main points of each part and put some question mark alongside text or words.

Next week class, I learned how to ask questions in different aspects from a sentence or specific words rather than only a question mark nearby text. In additional,  It could let me think deeply and help me to understand what are the story’s main points and themes.

Second part of process, I observed and annotated the illustrated man. In one story,  I chose one of all annotations to go deep thinking and searching. The annotation should have some details and implicit content to easily set up questions. could have  strange vocabularies or difficult to comprehend sentences.  Following picture was from the story of  book, I chose one annotation and set up a series of questions.

Picturess of annotation

The questions could be different aspects, such as about background, content, significant of story and so on. After that, answering questions showed that I have understood main point of story and expressed my personal comprehend for the questions.  In additional, annotation could help me remember the important part in story. For example, before class we would do check-in to remind stories and plots. Thus, annotations can usefully remember what is the important part.

Third part of process, I chose one of the same themes of stories to discuss what depicted situation in different ways from these stories. I set up three questions for both story in the same theme, and briefly summarized each story in a paragraph. Then, I answered questions using  details from the text of story. It could usefully support my ideas and thinking.

Overall, this is my practice of closing reading in the first unit.  I learned how to observation, annotation, set up questions and find out themes of articles.
